The Chinese Cultural Revolution 1966-1976
The Chinese Cultural Revolution, also known as the Great Proletarian Revolution, began in 1966 and was launched by Moa Zedong. Moa wanted to mobilize Chinese youth to prevent the development of a Soviet style of communism. In his attempt to do this, he closed down schools, encouraged students to join red guard units, which denunciated and persecuted Chinese teachers and intellectuals. Torture became common, and it is estimated that over 10 million died in the ensuing purges and related incidents.
The picture on the left describes the Chinese Cultural Revolution. In the red art image, the man or possible Red Gaurd is crushing a crucifix and the words above him say "Smash the old world, Establish a new world".
